Gill Scripts History with Double Ton as Captain

Guwahati: Shubman Gill etched his name into cricket history on Thursday, becoming the first captain to score double centuries in both Tests and ODIs as India pulled off a record 406-run chase against West Indies in the second ODI.

Gill’s unbeaten 223 off 133 balls, decorated with 26 fours and eight sixes, powered India past West Indies’ 405 for 7 with 39 balls to spare. He reached his double hundred in just 117 balls, the fastest in ODI history, eclipsing Ishan Kishan’s 126-ball effort against Bangladesh in 2022.

A cabinet of records

The innings was Gill’s second ODI double century after his 208 against New Zealand in 2023, making him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to achieve multiple ODI double tons. It is also the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, and the highest ODI score by an Indian captain, bettering Virender Sehwag’s 219 against West Indies in 2011.

Gill reached his hundred in 62 balls — the fastest by an Indian captain, breaking Rohit’s 63-ball mark — and his 150 in 89 balls, also an Indian record. Paired with his 269 against England at Edgbaston last year, he now stands alone as the only captain with Test and ODI double hundreds.

Chase of the ages

West Indies had posted their highest ODI total ever, 405 for 7, built on centuries from John Campbell (101 off 68), Shai Hope (104 off 94) and Amir Jangoo (114 off 77). But Gill’s assault, supported by Rohit’s hundred and contributions from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, made light of the target. Former spinner Harbhajan Singh led the tributes, congratulating Gill and noting the pride his father would feel.

A year for the ages

The Guwahati epic capped a phenomenal 2026 for Gill. In 11 ODIs this year he has amassed 894 runs at 127.71 with a strike rate of 119.51, including three centuries. Across 69 ODIs he now has 3,712 runs at 65.12 with 11 hundreds, numbers that place him among the finest ODI batters of his generation at just 27.

The chase itself was the second-highest successful pursuit in ODI history and India’s highest, eclipsing several famous efforts. That it came against the backdrop of West Indies’ record total made it all the more remarkable — a day when 811 runs were scored and the bowlers on both sides were left searching for answers.
