PSL 2027: Schedule, Auction Model, New Teams Explained

PSL 2027: Schedule, Auction Model, New Teams Explained

Karachi: The 12th edition of the Pakistan Super League is tentatively scheduled from March 19 to May 2, 2027, with the PCB expected to confirm dates after consulting franchises in the coming weeks.

Schedule and IPL Overlap

PSL 12 will once again overlap with the IPL, which runs from March 10 to May 15. The clash has become a fixture of recent seasons without denting the PSL’s domestic popularity — Pakistani fans have continued to prioritise their league, and television ratings have held firm. With Ramadan expected to begin around February 8, the March start places the tournament after Eid.

The Auction Revolution

The biggest story is structural: the PSL has abandoned its decade-long draft system in favour of a player auction. The PCB pushed the reform through to improve competitive balance, transparency and player earnings. Retentions have been slashed from eight to four per franchise — just one per category (Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver) — meaning teams face brutal choices. Lahore Qalandars, for instance, cannot keep both Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf under the new rules.

Team purses have been raised to USD 1.6 million, up from around USD 1.1 million, and each franchise may sign one player directly outside the auction — restricted to players who did not feature in the PSL last season.

Eight Teams

The league expands to eight sides with the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot. The two new franchises will each be allowed to sign four players before the auction from the pool released by existing teams. Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have signalled their intent to build around a pace core, reportedly retaining Shaheen Afridi as their Platinum pick.

What Next

The auction date is yet to be finalised, though franchises have already begun contacting overseas stars — particularly those not involved in the IPL. Venues and logistics will be confirmed in the coming weeks as preparations gather pace.

Franchise Strategies Emerging

Early retention signals reveal contrasting approaches. Lahore Qalandars are doubling down on pace, Quetta Gladiators are banking on mystery spin with Abrar Ahmed as their Platinum retention, and Karachi Kings have locked in Hassan Ali to lead their attack. The reduced retention limit means genuine stars will enter the auction — a prospect that has player agents quietly excited about record bids.

The USD 1.6 million purse represents a significant jump and should help the PSL compete for talent against the SA20 and ILT20, which occupy similar windows. How the eight-team dynamics play out in the auction room will define the season.
