New Delhi: In a first for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer will split the ODI captaincy on the tour of New Zealand, with the BCCI announcing on Friday that Gill will lead the side in the first three ODIs and Iyer will take over for the final two.
Iyer will serve as Gill’s deputy for the opening three matches, while Ishan Kishan has been named vice-captain for the last two ODIs — for which Gill, KL Rahul and Anshul Kamboj will be unavailable as they turn out for India A against New Zealand A from November 7 to 10.
The headline selection call sees Jasprit Bumrah rested from the ODI leg entirely, with the pace spearhead available only for the two-Test series. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been named in both ODI squads, while Akash Deep returns to the Test squad after recovering from a back stress fracture. Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna have been picked subject to fitness.
India’s tour begins with five T20Is from October 22, with the ODI series starting November 4 in Auckland and the two Tests from November 19 in Wellington.
