Mizoram’s Chinmay Sutar etched his name into Indian cricket history on Monday, becoming only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to score a quadruple century. Playing in just his second first-class match, the left-hander remained unbeaten on 400 against Nagaland in the Plate group fixture at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima.Sutar faced 517 balls in his monumental innings, striking 46 fours and seven sixes. He went past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to post the second-highest individual score in the competition’s history, with only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in the 1948-49 season standing ahead of him – a record that has survived 78 years. The defining phase of the innings came after Mizoram had slipped to 391 for 9, with Sutar on 231 when last man Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak joined him. The pair put on an unbroken 190-run stand for the tenth wicket – the third-highest last-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history – before Sutar brought up his 400 in the 155th over and Mizoram declared at 581 for 9. At stumps, Nagaland were 50 for 1, trailing by 531 runs.Sutar is now only the second Indian to score 400 or more in a first-class innings, and just the tenth batter ever to reach the milestone, joining a list that features batting greats such as Brian Lara and Don Bradman. He made his Ranji debut for Mizoram in last week’s season opener against Manipur after obtaining a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association, scoring 35 and 99 in that game.It was a day of dominant batting across the Ranji Trophy. Delhi captain Ayush Badoni smashed 217 off 246 balls to set up a declaration at 648 for 6 against Gujarat, while Sarfaraz Khan’s unbeaten 139 – his 18th first-class hundred – drove Mumbai to 398 for 4 and a 258-run lead over Himachal Pradesh. Rajat Patidar’s unbeaten 107 took Madhya Pradesh into the lead against Puducherry.
