London: England’s Test squad for the three-match series in South Africa has not been announced yet, but with the first Test starting on December 17 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, the announcement is now one of the most closely watched dates in the English winter calendar. This page will be updated when the squad drops.

The series runs through the festive window: the first Test at the Wanderers from December 17 to 21, the Boxing Day Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion from December 26 to 30, and the New Year’s Test at Newlands in Cape Town from January 3. A three-match ODI series follows in early January, starting at Paarl on January 10. The tour is a major examination for both sides in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, with South Africa chasing the No. 1 Test ranking during their current home season against Australia.

The clearest guide to the selection pool is the ECB’s central-contract list for 2026-27, announced on October 13. Thirty players hold central contracts, with nine more on development deals, and the Test core is familiar: captain Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith form the batting spine, while Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts head the pace options and Shoaib Bashir the spin department. Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks offer batting cover and part-time spin, and Liam Dawson’s left-arm spin remains an option for South African surfaces that traditionally assist seam early and turn late.

The selection questions, though, are less settled than the core. Stokes’ fitness and how much he can bowl across three high-intensity Tests will shape the balance of the side, as it always does. The pace attack’s durability is the other live issue: Archer, Atkinson and Carse all carry recent injury histories, and the selectors must decide how many fast bowlers to carry for a tour where the Wanderers and Centurion traditionally reward pace and bounce. The opener’s slot alongside Duckett, the reserve wicketkeeper, and whether to take a second specialist spinner are the remaining calls.

One scheduling wrinkle affects the white-ball leg rather than the Tests: the SA20 runs from January 9 to February 14, clashing directly with the ODI series. England players holding SA20 deals will face availability decisions for the 50-over matches, a complication the selectors will have to manage once both squads are named.

South Africa, meanwhile, will be captained by Temba Bavuma, with their pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer offering spin options. England have not won a Test series in South Africa since 2015-16, and the last tour, in 2019-20, ended 3-1 to the hosts. For a side building towards the next Ashes cycle, this is the winter’s defining assignment — and the squad announcement, when it comes, will tell us how bold the selectors are prepared to be.

We will update this article with the full squad, and the winners and losers from it, as soon as the ECB names it.
