Hasan Mahmud produced a career-best performance with the ball as Bangladesh bowled West Indies out for 356 on Day 2 of the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday, before the hosts stumbled to 36 for 2 at tea in reply.

The right-arm pacer finished with six for 90, his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket and the most by a Bangladesh fast bowler. It was also his first five-for on home soil, and he became only the second bowler after Australia’s Nathan Lyon to claim each of his first five Test five-wicket hauls in five different countries.

West Indies had resumed on 235 for 4, with Amir Jangoo unbeaten on 111. The left-hander carried on to 133 off 212 balls, striking 13 fours and two sixes, and added 106 runs for the fifth wicket with Justin Greaves, who made 51. Jangoo had earlier shared a 131-run stand with debutant Kevin Wickham, who scored 61, after the visitors had slipped to 27 for 3 on the opening day.

Bangladesh took the second new ball at the start of the 81st over, and Mahmud made it count immediately. Bowling from around the wicket, he sent down a back-of-a-length delivery at 131.4 kph that nipped back sharply and crashed into the top of middle and off stump, ending Jangoo’s fine innings. Off the very next ball, he had captain Roston Chase caught behind by Litton Das for a golden duck.

Mahmud came agonisingly close to a hat-trick — his second in Test cricket in the space of three weeks, after his treble against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi — but Joshua Bishop survived the hat-trick ball when a DRS review overturned an lbw decision after replays showed an edge. Mahmud eventually completed his five-for when Bishop was stumped for 23 by Litton, who had come up to the stumps, making him the first Bangladesh fast bowler to claim a Test wicket through a stumping.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who ended a wait of more than 79 overs across the two Tests for a Bangladesh spinner to take a wicket when he dismissed Greaves, finished with two for 82, while Taskin Ahmed took two for 90. Shamar Joseph was bowled by Mahmud with the first ball of the second session, and Miraz wrapped up the innings by dismissing Jayden Seales, with Jomel Warrican unbeaten on 27.

There was worrying news for Bangladesh in the field, with opener Shadman Islam stretchered off after twisting his left ankle while chasing a ball to the fine-leg boundary in the 78th over. The left-hander, who scored a century in the first Test, was sent for an MRI scan and is doubtful for the rest of the match.

With Shadman unavailable, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was promoted to open alongside Tanzid Hasan, but the makeshift opener managed only five before Jayden Seales had him caught at slip. Tanzid made 16 before falling to a superb catch by debutant Wickham at cover point off Greaves, leaving Bangladesh on 36 for 2 at tea, still 320 runs behind, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto unbeaten on 11 and Towhid Hridoy on four.
