India T20I Squad for NZ: Iyer Captain, Bumrah Rested

Mumbai: The BCCI on Tuesday announced a 16-member India squad for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand, with Shreyas Iyer named captain and Jasprit Bumrah rested as part of workload management.

The squad: Shreyas Iyer (capt), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma (vice-capt), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav.

The series gets underway on October 22 in Christchurch, with the selection committee led by interim chairman Pragyan Ojha finalising the touring party after the Guwahati meetings.

Bumrah rested, Varun returns

Bumrah’s absence is the headline omission, but it is a planned one. The pace spearhead is being managed carefully through a packed calendar, and the tour gives India’s next line of quicks — including the exciting Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav — a chance to press their claims in helpful New Zealand conditions.

Varun Chakravarthy’s return is the other big talking point. The mystery spinner comes in for Ravi Bishnoi, rewarding consistent form and giving India an extra wicket-taking option through the middle overs. With Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel also in the mix, the spin department looks well stocked.

Bhuvi’s fairytale comeback

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recall, four years after he last played for India in November 2022, is the story of the squad. The 36-year-old forced his way back with 28 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, and Dinesh Karthik hailed the selectors’ courage in picking him.

Ishan Kishan’s red-ball resurgence has also kept him firmly in the white-ball frame, with the selectors rewarding his prolific run across formats in 2026. Kishan’s presence gives India explosive options at the top of the order.

Youth gets its chance

The squad has a distinctly forward-looking feel, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav all in the mix. The picks continue the panel’s refreshed approach under Ojha, with fitness inputs from the Centre of Excellence now part of every selection meeting.

Iyer’s elevation continues his steady rise as a leader, with the Mumbai batter having impressed in charge of domestic and franchise sides. Tilak Varma’s appointment as deputy signals the selectors’ long-term thinking around the team’s leadership group.

Iyer’s leadership will be watched closely as he takes charge of a transitional side, with Tilak Varma as his deputy. With the next T20 World Cup cycle already underway, the New Zealand tour is an early audition for several fringe spots — and the competition for places has rarely been fiercer.
