BBL 2026-27: Stokes, Allen, Zampa Headline Signings

Sydney: The Big Bash League’s 16th season is shaping up as one of its most star-studded yet, with Ben Stokes’ return to Australian franchise cricket headlining a busy signing period ahead of BBL 2026-27.

Stokes, who last played in the BBL in 2015, has signed with the Adelaide Strikers for the entire season in a deal reported to exceed 500,000 Australian dollars — making him the competition’s highest-profile overseas recruit. The England all-rounder has not played T20 cricket since 2023, and his comeback adds genuine box-office appeal.

Big names on the move

Finn Allen has switched from the Perth Scorchers to the Melbourne Stars on a three-year deal after finishing as last season’s leading run-scorer with 466 runs in the Scorchers’ title-winning campaign. Tim Seifert has joined the Sydney Sixers on a one-year contract, while Adam Zampa has moved to the Hobart Hurricanes — his fifth BBL club — on a two-year deal. Zampa, Australia’s leading T20I wicket-taker, has 138 BBL wickets at an economy of 7.28.

Jonny Bairstow will play his maiden BBL season with the Melbourne Renegades, and England twins Jamie and Craig Overton have both signed for the Melbourne Stars — the first twins to appear in the men’s competition. Zak Crawley has committed to a full season with the Perth Scorchers, while Tom Curran and Tim Robinson have joined the Brisbane Heat.

New contracting landscape

The league scrapped the overseas player draft this year, lifting its contracting embargo on August 27. Clubs can now sign players directly, complete 18-player squads with up to three internationals, and face no minimum overseas requirement. Brisbane’s attempt to lure Melbourne Stars captain Marcus Stoinis was blocked, with the Stars refusing to release their contracted skipper.

Renegades rebuild

No club has been busier than the Melbourne Renegades. Losing Seifert and Zampa in one window would cripple most sides, but Bairstow’s maiden BBL campaign and Bracewell’s arrival soften the blow. Bairstow, a veteran of 285 T20s, called the MCG “one of the sporting stadiums in the world you want to play in” after signing.

The title race

Perth Scorchers, the defending champions, have moved smartly — Crawley’s full-season commitment adds to a top order already featuring Mitch Marsh, Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie. The Stars, meanwhile, look transformed: Allen’s 466-run season, the Overton twins’ pace and power, and a core of Maxwell and Stoinis make them genuine contenders.

Hobart’s capture of Zampa could be the signing of the window. The leg-spinner’s control through the middle overs has decided countless BBL games, and pairing him with Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith gives the Hurricanes one of the league’s most complete attacks.

With the Ashes running through the early summer, availability will be a talking point — but on paper, BBL|16 looks as deep as any season in the league’s history.
