BBL Makes History in Chennai: First-Ever Match Outside Australia to Open the 2026-27 Season on December 12

Chennai: The Big Bash League is coming to India. For the first time in its 15-season history, a BBL match will be played outside Australia — and the honour goes to Chennai, where the 2026-27 season will open at MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.

The historic curtain-raiser sees Melbourne Renegades take on defending champions Perth Scorchers at Chepauk, in a fixture that doubles as a statement of intent from Cricket Australia about where the league’s future audience lies. The season then runs through to the final on Australia Day, January 26, 2027, with the Renegades splitting their home games between the MCG and Junction Oval after leaving Marvel Stadium following 15 years there.

Why Chennai, and why now? The answer is the size of the Indian cricket audience. The BBL has long been watched in India, but never played there, and staging the opener in front of a Chepauk crowd gives the league a direct connection to the world’s biggest cricket market at the start of its season. It also mirrors the WBBL’s own expansion thinking — the women’s league, which opened its 2026-27 season on October 29, has introduced the new “designated batters” rule this season, a change the BBL will mirror in 2026-27.

The fixture itself promises a strong contest. Perth Scorchers arrive as defending champions and the BBL’s most successful club, while the Renegades, in a season of change at home, will want to make their first game of the campaign count on a neutral-but-loud stage. Chepauk’s traditionally spin-friendly surface and its reputation for knowledgeable, passionate crowds should make for a very different BBL atmosphere from the drop-in pitches of Melbourne and Perth.

The rest of the BBL|16 calendar keeps the traditions fans expect. Christmas Eve cricket returns, with Renegades facing Hobart Hurricanes at Junction Oval, and the season builds through the festive period towards the January 26 final. But it is the Chennai opener that will define this season’s story: if it succeeds, it opens the door to more BBL fixtures beyond Australia in future seasons, and to a closer relationship between Australian domestic cricket and the Indian audience that already watches it in huge numbers.

For Indian fans, the December 12 opener is also a rare chance to watch world-class T20 cricket live at home in the middle of the Indian domestic season, with the BBL’s Australian stars and overseas signings on show at one of the country’s most storied grounds. Ticket and broadcast details for the Chennai match will be confirmed closer to the date, and this guide will be updated as they are announced.
