BPL Cancelled: BCB Pulls Plug Amid Corruption Crisis

BPL Cancelled: BCB Pulls Plug Amid Corruption Crisis

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Premier League will not take place this season, BCB president Tamim Iqbal confirmed, in a stunning admission of the crisis engulfing the country’s flagship T20 competition.

Tamim’s Blunt Assessment

“I don’t think so. The BPL will not happen this year,” Tamim told reporters at an event in Mirpur, citing the match-fixing allegations and corruption that have plagued recent editions. The BPL, launched in 2012, has struggled to match the financial success of the IPL or Big Bash, and the BCB has reportedly lost nearly 400 million taka (USD 3.27 million) across the last two seasons.

“If I was a player, I’d be disheartened too,” Tamim added. “But they also know that this tournament should be staged in a way that the BCB can be proud of. Are we proud of what has happened over the last few years? Perhaps not.”

The Corruption Probe

The BCB suspended a player and multiple team officials over betting violations in May following an anti-corruption investigation into the league. The previous edition was further disrupted when domestic cricketers boycotted matches over comments by a BCB official questioning their financial value, forcing several fixtures to be rescheduled.

What Happens Next

Tamim insisted the league will return, but only when the fundamentals are fixed. “I don’t want to hurry. I want to do it right. If that takes six or 12 months, I’ll take that time,” he said. Notably, three franchises — Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Warriors and Dhaka Capitals — had already backed major structural reforms in August, including financial sustainability measures and a long-term five-year calendar, and indicated willingness to accept a one-year break.

For Bangladesh’s players, the pause is a significant blow — the BPL has been the primary shop window for domestic talent. But if the reset produces a cleaner, financially viable league, the short-term pain may prove worthwhile.

A League in Decline

The warning signs were visible for years. The BPL never achieved the broadcast revenues of its competitors, franchise turnover was high, and organisational chaos — from boycotts to rescheduled fixtures — eroded credibility. The May suspensions, which followed a detailed anti-corruption probe, were the final straw for a board that had run out of patience.

Bangladesh’s domestic cricketers now face a season without their most lucrative tournament. Young players who used the BPL as a springboard to national selection must find other avenues. The Dhaka Premier League and National Cricket League will carry extra importance this winter.

Legacy

The Falcons join an exclusive list of CPL champions, and their first title felt earned — built on smart recruitment, with Moeen Ali’s experience blending perfectly with Caribbean flair. For the tournament, another competitive season with emerging stars underlines the CPL’s vital role in West Indies cricket’s ecosystem.
