Georgia Wareham produced the most destructive innings of her WBBL career as Melbourne Renegades beat Adelaide Strikers by 36 runs in Match 13 of the Women’s Big Bash League at Junction Oval on Saturday.

The Renegades, sent in to bat after the Strikers won the toss, compiled 188 for three from their 20 overs — their third-highest total in club history and their best in five years. The platform was laid by Hayley Matthews, who struck 49 from 32 balls with 10 fours before falling one short of her half-century to a stunning catch by Laura Wolvaardt.

The match was transformed in the closing overs. Wareham reached her half-century from just 22 deliveries and finished unbeaten on 73 from 31 balls, her highest score in the WBBL, with six fours and four sixes. Courtney Webb, coming in alongside her, brought up her own fifty from 40 balls and remained not out on 52 from 42 deliveries. Together, the pair put on an unbroken 110-run stand from just 56 balls, lifting the Renegades from 78 for two at the halfway stage to a formidable total.

Adelaide’s chase never recovered from the loss of early wickets. Maia Bouchier top-scored with 54 from 38 balls, but the Strikers kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and injury-plagued Australian fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck removed any doubt about the result with a double-wicket maiden in the 17th over, the second of the Strikers’ power surge. The Strikers finished on 152 for eight, 36 runs short.

Wareham was named Player of the Match for an innings that turned a competitive total into a commanding one. At the halfway mark of their innings the Renegades were 78 for two and heading for a middling total; the Wareham-Webb stand added 110 runs in 56 balls to take them to a score the Strikers never looked like chasing. Adelaide’s reply underlined the value of that late surge — the visitors never got ahead of the required rate once the early wickets fell, and Vlaeminck’s double-wicket maiden in the 17th over closed the door with the equation already beyond reach.

It was the Renegades’ second win in four days, lifting them to two wins from four matches in WBBL|12, while the Strikers slipped to one win from three. For the Renegades, the win keeps their campaign moving in the right direction, with Wareham’s batting now adding a new dimension to a side already built around her leg-spin and Matthews’ all-round class.

With the WBBL season gathering pace, Wareham’s statement innings is a reminder of the all-round quality in the Renegades’ ranks — and of how quickly a match can swing when a batter of her calibre finds her range in the final overs.
