Mumbai: India’s women’s domestic season gets underway on October 26 with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, launching a packed calendar that runs through to March and feeds directly into the WPL 2027 auction.
The Calendar
The BCCI has laid out five senior women’s tournaments for 2026-27. The Senior Women’s T20 Trophy (October 26 to November 20) will be played across Lucknow, Pune, Delhi and Mohali, with Ahmedabad hosting the knockouts. The Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal T20 Trophy follows in Guwahati from November 24 to December 4.
The 50-over leg begins with the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy (December 19 to January 10) across Cuttack, Jaipur, Baroda and Raipur, with Chennai staging the knockouts. The Inter-Zonal One-Day Trophy (February 17-27, Chennai) and the Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (March 13-28, Dehradun) complete the season.
WPL 2027 Auction Looms
The retentions for WPL 2027 closed on September 28, with 63 players — including 23 overseas stars — retained across the five franchises. Twenty-seven slots, including seven overseas, remain open ahead of the auction in Kochi on October 28. UP Warriorz enter with the largest purse at INR 3.65 crore.
Domestic performances in the T20 Trophy will directly shape auction dynamics. Franchises have scouts tracking the tournament closely, and a breakout season can transform an uncapped player’s career overnight.
Players to Watch
Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma arrives with serious pedigree — most wickets (21) in last season’s Senior Women’s T20 Trophy and joint-most (12) in the Inter-Zonal T20. Delhi off-spinner Nazma Khan was the Inter-Zonal’s leading wicket-taker and remains a consistent performer.
With the bat, Mumbai’s Humaira Kazi was last season’s second-highest run-scorer with 320 runs at a brisk clip. Teenager Deeya Yadav, who smashed an unbeaten 213 off 125 balls in U-15 cricket, is one of the most exciting young prospects in the country.
The season also marks a new era for several state sides integrating players from India’s U-19 World Cup-winning squads, ensuring the talent pipeline stays strong.
Why This Season Matters
Beyond the WPL auction, the domestic season shapes India’s international future. The selectors have made it clear: consistent domestic performers will be rewarded. With the senior team in transition in places, spots are genuinely up for grabs.
The multi-day Inter-Zonal trophy in March adds a red-ball dimension increasingly valued in the women’s game. Players who can adapt across formats will stand out.
Watch for breakout stars from the U-19 World Cup-winning squads filtering into senior state teams this season — the production line has never been stronger.
