Durban: Kagiso Rabada’s participation in the first Test against Australia at Kingsmead on Friday remains uncertain, with South Africa captain Temba Bavuma admitting the team is taking a cautious approach with its premier fast bowler.
“He’s still standing,” Bavuma said with a smile when asked about Rabada’s fitness, striking a cautiously optimistic tone. “We’ll make a final call closer to the game. He’s too important to risk if he’s not fully ready.”
Why Rabada matters so much
Rabada is South Africa’s spearhead and the difference between a good attack and a great one. Against an Australian batting line-up that feasts on anything short of relentless pressure, his absence would force South Africa to reshuffle their entire bowling plan for the series opener.
The quick has a formidable record at Kingsmead, where pace and bounce traditionally reward the willing. South Africa’s medical staff have been managing his workload carefully through the buildup.
South Africa’s options if he misses out
Should Rabada fail to prove his fitness, South Africa can turn to a pace pool that includes the returning Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi. None, though, replicates Rabada’s combination of pace, control and big-match temperament.
Bavuma stressed the decision would be made with the full series in mind, not just the Kingsmead Test. “It’s a three-Test series. We need him firing, not just present,” he said.
What it means for Australia
For Australia, Rabada’s potential absence removes the one bowler who has consistently troubled their top order in recent series. Pat Cummins’ side will still expect a stern examination from South Africa’s remaining quicks, but the psychological edge shifts noticeably.
A final decision is expected on the eve of the Test. South Africa name their XI at the toss on Friday morning.
