Potchefstroom: Marnus Labuschagne gave Australia’s selectors exactly what they wanted on Saturday, scoring his first century in 11 months in the tour match at Senwes Park — less than 50km from his Klerksdorp birthplace — ahead of the three-Test series against South Africa starting in Durban on October 9.
Right place, right time
There was something poetic about the venue: Senwes Park is where Labuschagne scored his maiden ODI hundred for Australia back in 2020. On Saturday he looked, in Matt Renshaw’s words, like “the Marn that I know” — feet moving well, energy high at the crease, reacting rather than thinking.
Renshaw added that the Smith-Labuschagne partnership “generated a sense of safety” — a reminder of how productive that pairing has been for Australia over the years.
The context
Labuschagne’s form has been under the microscope, and a hundred in the final warm-up could hardly be better timed. With Steve Smith back in the squad — eight years on from the Cape Town ball-tampering saga, alongside fellow survivors Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon — Australia’s batting looks settled if Labuschagne fires.
Series schedule
1st Test: Durban (Oct 9-13), 2nd Test: Gqeberha (Oct 18-22), 3rd Test: Cape Town (Oct 27-31). A WTC-points heavyweight clash, and Labuschagne has just given himself the perfect launchpad.
